Well, the rash not only didn't go away, but it got worse, so after a restless night laast night of only a few hours of sleep (in between practically ripping my skin off with my nails - thank goodness they aren't longer!), I called the doctor's office first thing this morning and had the answering service page my PCP, who proceeded to tell me that my symptoms were NOT typical and I needed to go and see someone immediately.
I tried to get in touch with the insurance company (name will be withheld), and of course my series of pressing buttons (I'm guaranteed they do this to make you THINK they are preparing to answer your questions in the appropriate dept., but they're really just trying to bide extra time and make you feel like you're not waiting as long) and remaining on hold did notthing but result in an automated message "Our system is currently experiencing technical difficulties. Please call back at a later time."). So much for an attempt at ER pre-authorization!
So, off I headed to our local Piedmont Hospital hoping that no car accident (or food poinsoning!) victims would be arriving in the ER at the same time as me. Fortunately for me, the waiting room for the ER was basically empty and after being immediately taken off to triage, I was escorted back to a room. While I waited for the dr., and not knowing how long I'd be sitting there, I proceeded to write thank you notes, figuring the time wouldn't be completely wasted...
Fortunately the wait wasn't long, and I'm not sure how many times the ER doctor has entered the patient's room seeing her/him (yeah, right!) with thank you note cards and gift lists spread out all over the bed!
The doctor and her PA could not figure out the cause of the rash (mysterious, it remains), so she gave me two prescriptions - prednisone and amoxicillin - and told me that should take care of healing them up within the next few days. Who knew that rashes are better treated by oral meds than by topical lotions??
Well, so far I've gotten two doses in me, and while the rashes not itching quite as badly as they had been previously, they are definitely not gone yet...
My biggest request right now is to just get through the night for the first time in 3 days without waking up and tearing through my skin.
I hope to have good news to share tomorrow...
On a MUCH better note, Bill heads home from NH tomorrow morning and hopefully I'll get to see him before I have to head to work!
